Implant Dentistry

Missing teeth can significantly impact your oral health and overall well-being. They can make it difficult to chew, speak, and even smile with confidence. Fortunately, there's a solution that offers a permanent, natural-looking replacement: dental implants.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are small, titanium posts that serve as artificial tooth roots. They are surgically placed into the jawbone, where they fuse with the surrounding bone over time, creating a stable and durable foundation for replacement teeth. Once integrated, dental implants can support a wide range of prostheses, from single crowns to full arches of teeth.

Implants offer numerous benefits compared to traditional dentures or bridges. They:

  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • Prevent bone loss in the jawbone
  • Allow for better chewing function
  • Improve speech clarity
  • Are more comfortable than traditional dentures
  • Have a high success rate and can last a lifetime with proper care

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants come in various types to accommodate different needs. The most common types include:

  • Endosteal implants: These are the most commonly used and are placed directly into the jawbone.
  • Subperiosteal implants: These are placed under the gum tissue but on or above the jawbone. They're typically used when there's not enough bone height for endosteal implants.
  • Zygomatic implants: These are placed into the cheekbone and are used in severe cases of bone loss in the upper jaw.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure typically involves several steps:

  1. Consultation: Our dentist will examine your mouth, review your medical history, and discuss your goals for treatment. They may also order X-rays or 3D images to assess the condition of your jawbone.
  2. Planning: Based on the consultation, our team will create a detailed treatment plan outlining the steps involved in placing your dental implants.
  3. Surgery: The actual implant placement involves numbing the area and making a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone. A hole is drilled into the bone, and the implant is screwed in place. In some cases, a temporary crown or denture may be placed at this time.
  4. Healing: After surgery, it takes several months for the implant to fuse with the surrounding bone (osseointegration). During this time, you'll need to maintain good oral hygiene and avoid smoking.
  5. Restoration: Once the implant has healed, our dentist will attach an abutment to connect the implant to a crown or other prosthetic. The final restoration is then placed on top of the abutment.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. Here are some tips for maintaining your implants:

  • Brush and floss regularly to prevent bacterial buildup around the implant.
  • Avoid smoking, as it can interfere with the healing process and increase the risk of implant failure.
  • Attend regular check-ups and cleanings at our office to ensure your implants remain healthy.
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects or using your teeth as tools, as this can damage the implant or the restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best method of replacing missing teeth? Are dental implants worth it?

+

If you've lost a tooth due to injury, decay, gum disease, or any other reason, we recommend dental implants to replace missing teeth. Dental implants come the closest to replicating the look, feel, and function of your natural teeth.

Are dental implants painful?

+

Dental implants are placed into the jawbone and mirror the same function as the root of a tooth. The procedure for dental implants is usually performed while a patient is sedated. Patients who undergo IV sedation must have an empty stomach and transportation home following the procedure. Most sedation patients will have little to no memory of the procedure occurring.

What are dental implants made of?

+

Generally, dental implants are made out of a biocompatible metal such as titanium. Biocompatible metals are also used for other common bone implants (such as shoulder, hip, and knee replacements). The visible portion of the implant is usually made out of porcelain and is custom-made to match your existing teeth.

Are dental implants permanent?

+

Dental implants are designed to fuse to the bone, which makes them become permanent fixtures. Typically speaking, the success rate is nearly 100%. There are few cases in which the implant will not fuse as intended and must be removed. If this happens to occur, the procedure can be attempted again a few months later.

Are dental implants expensive?

+

Dental implants are not usually covered by dental insurance, but may be covered under a patient's medical insurance. Our office and your insurance company can discuss coverage options with you based on your individual case and treatment plan.

How do I care for my dental implants?

+

It's easy... just take care of an implant as if it's a natural tooth! This involves regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. If you have any concerns about your implant, contact us immediately.
